Burwel was born in 1856 in Griffin, Nash, N C.1 Burwel's father was Neverson W Cooper and his mother was Nancy K. His paternal grandparents were George Cooper and Temperance Drake Cooper. He had four brothers and three sisters, named Neverson, Charles, Frederick, John, Nancy, Sarah A and Martha. He was the oldest of the eight children.-
