August was born on October 11th, 1818 in Schwelm, Westfalen, Prussia.1   August's father was Heinrich Reuter and his mother was Maria Catherina Kuntz. He had two brothers and six sisters, named Carl Heinrich, Heinrich, Carolina, Henrietta, Dorothea, Albertine, Maria Wilhelmine and Auguste.  He was the oldest of the nine children.1
