Gruffudd was born about 1575 in Aber, Caernarvonshire, Wales. Gruffudd's father was William Thomas and his mother is Ellen Griffith. His paternal grandfather was Rhys+ Thomas and his paternal grandmother is Jane+ Puleston. He had four brothers and four sisters, named Rhys, William, Robert, John, Ellen, Gaynor, Margred and Jane.
