William Hilton 
William was born about 1540 in Durham or Yorkshire, England. William's father was William Hilton and his mother was Margaret Metcalf. His paternal grandparents were William Hilton and Sybil Lumley; his maternal grandparents were James Metcalf and Margaret Piggot. He had a brother named Mark. He is the older of the two children.General Notes
"SIR WILLIAM HILTON, of Hilton, dejure, according to modern doctrine, LORD HILTON, son and heir. He adhered strongly to the Queen's side in the rising of the Northern Earls in 1569, and brought 100 horsemen in aid. He was appointed Sheriff of Durham, 11 November 1576. On 5 October 1578 he did homage and fealty to the Bishop of Durham for the manor of Hilton, and took the oath of supremacy. On 4 October 1587 the Queen appointed him Sheriff of Durham, till further orders. He married, shortly after 21 February 1557/8, Anne, daughter of Sir John YORKE, Sheriff of London, by Anne, daughter of Robert SMYTH, of London. He was buried in Hilton Chapel, 9 September 1600. His wife survived him. [CP 7:31-2]"
