"BARONY OF LUMLEY

III. 2. GEORGE LUMLEY, son and heir, was aged 40 and more at his father's death. In 1461 he was appointed joint constable of Scarborough Castle. He was Sheriff of Northumberland 1461-1463 and again 1467-71 as deputy of the Earl of Northumberland. On 23 April 1467 he was elected knight of the shire for Northumberland, and was sheriff of Durham and Sadbergh in 1471. In 1475 he was appointed joint keeper with his father of Weardale Forest. He was lord lieutenant of the county 1480-81, and in 1487 took part in the expedition into Scotland led by Richard, Duke of Gloucester, with a view of establishing the Duke of Albany on the Scottish throne; Berwick was besieged, and surrendered by negotiation; Lumley was made banneret by the Duke of Gloucester in Hooton field, near Berwick, 22 August. Though a Yorkist in all his associations, he submitted at once to Henry VII; and on 25 September 1485 was one of the commissioners of array in Yorkshire, in expectation of an invasion from Scotland, and later filled other local offices. He had a patent for livery of his lands, without proof of age as George Lumley, Knight, son and heir of Thomas Lumley, Knight, 12 May 1486. In that year he waited upon Henry VII in his northern progress. He took part in the expedition against the Scots under the Earl of Surrey, 1497. In 1503 he and his son met and escorted Margaret Tudor, daughter of Henry VII and Queen of Scotland on her journey North after her marriage, 3 miles out of Darlington. He married Elizabeth, daughter and heir of Roger THORNTON, a wealthy merchant and landowner of Newcastle, by Elizabeth, daughter of John (DE GREYSTOKE), LORD GREYSTOKE. He died 13 November 1507.[CP 8:273-4]"
