His paternal grandparents were Ludwig I Von Rhein and Louise Von Hessen-Darmstadt; his maternal grandparents were Karl Ludwig Zahringen and Amalie Friederike Von Hessen-Darmstadt. He had a brother named Karl Von. He was the younger of the two children. He died at the age of 65 on December 15th, 1888 in Darmstadt, Germany.General Notes
