Jean was born about 1684 in Lowlands, Auchindoir, Aberdeen, Scotland. Jean's father was John Gordon and her mother is Helen Cochrane. Her paternal grandparents were George Gordon and Jeanne Wemyss; her maternal grandparents were William Cochrane and Catherine Kennedy. She had a brother named William.
