His paternal grandparents are Jacob Beals and Elizabeth Blackburn; his maternal grandparents were Daniel Beals and Suzannah Jackson. He had two brothers and five sisters, named Samuel Blackburn, Daniel, Susanna, Hannah, Elizabeth, Mahala and Phebe Ann. He is the oldest of the eight children.General Notes
