Edward Bates 
Edward was born on August 25th, 1788 in Henrico, VA. Edward's father is Thomas Fleming Bates and his mother is Caroline Matilda Woodson. His paternal grandfather was Fleming Bates and his paternal grandmother is Sarah Jordan; his maternal grandfather was Charles Woodson and his maternal grandmother is Agnes Richardson Parsons. In his early years, Edward Bates "..secured a position reading law with (this?) Rufus Easton , a distinguished frontier lawyer who had served as a territorial judge and delegate to Congress."
Edward and his siblings were born into a Quaker family. His father was a practicing Quaker and fell out of favor in his "society" because he took up arms in the Continental army against the British, for which his own family was of course very proud, having passed down the flintlock musket he had carried.
Julia (Coalter) and Edward Bates together had 17 children and apparently enjoyed a very domestic and bonded marriage throughout life. After their marriage in 1823, Bate`s found "...home and family domesticity eclipsed politics as the signal pleasure in his life."
Edward Bates, William H. Seward, Salmon P. Chase, and Abraham Lincoln vied for nomination at the May 18, 1860 Republican National Convention. Eventually, Bates, Seward, and Chase all served in President Lincoln`s cabinet.
