In Doris Kearns Goodwin`s outstanding book "Team of Rivals--The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln", she states that Thomas Fleming Bates was "...a member of the landed gentry with an honored position in his community. (He) was a planter and merchant who owned dozens of slaves and counted Thomas Jefferson and James Madison among his friends. His mother, Caroline Woodson Bates, was of old Virginia stock."
