His paternal grandfather was Pedro I De Bourgogne and his paternal grandmother is Theresa Lourenso; his maternal grandparents were John Of Gaunt+ Plantagenet and Blanche+ Plantagenet. He had two brothers and two sisters, named Duarte I De, Pedro De, Beatriz De Portugal De and Isabel De. He was the youngest of the five children. He had a half-brother named Afonso I De.
