Adam was born in 1760 in Joy, Adams Co., PA. Adam's father was Andrew Ashbaugh and his mother was Maria Artemesia Odessina. His paternal grandfather was Johann Heinrich Eschbach and his paternal grandmother is Maria Elizabetha Merck. He had seven brothers and three sisters, named John, Henry, Andrew, Frederick, Alexander, Thomas, William, Maria Magdalena, Elizabeth and Esther.
