Adela was born about 1034 in Vexin, Île-de-France, France.  Adela's father was Count Raoul ("the Great") III of Valois, Vexin, Amiens and her mother was Adele de Bar-sur-Aube.  Her paternal grandfather was Seigneur Raoul II of Vexin, Crepy and Valois and her paternal grandmother is Adelaide de Breteuil; her maternal grandfather was Count Nocher III of Bar-sur-Aube. She has a brother and two sisters, named Theobald, Alix and Hawyse.  She is the second oldest of the four children. She had two half-brothers named Guy and Geoffrey.
