Azo was born about 0979 in Este. Azo's father was Marchese Obert II in Liguria and his mother was Railinda di Como. His paternal grandfather was Count Obert I of Lucca and his paternal grandmother is Guilla di Spoleto; his maternal grandfather was Comte Wirprand di Piazenza. He had two sisters named Bertha and Bertha. He was the oldest of the three children. He died in 1015.-
