Richard "Tonbridge" FitzGilbert was born before 1035 in Beinfaite, Normandy, France. Richard "Tonbridge" FitzGilbert's father was Gilbert Fitzgodfrey de Crispin and his mother is Gunnora d'Anjou. His paternal grandfather was Godfrey "of Normandy" d"Eu and his paternal grandmother is Heloise de Guines; his maternal grandparents are Fulk d'Anjou and Beatrice de Goz. He had two brothers and three sisters, named Baldwin Fitzgilbert, Gilbert, Elsie Hesilia, Emma and Anne. He was the third youngest of the six children. He died in 1090 in Tonbridge, Essex, England. Soon after his lordship wasrecovered by the Welsh. BIOGRAPHY: Richard was kinsman and companion ofWilliam the Conqueror. He founded the house of Clare during the conquestand played a major role in suppressing the revolt of 1075. BIOGRAPHY:Richard was a knight who served in the Norman invasion of England in1066. Richard was regent of England jointly with William de Warenneduring the Conqueror's absence in 1075 and served in other capacities forthe King.King William granted him one of the largest fiefs in theterritorialsettlement. The lordship centered on Clare and Suffolk.William arranged for Richard's marriage to Rohese, sister of WalterGiffard, and her dowry consisting of lands in Huntingdon and Hertfordbecame absorbed in family inheritance.
