Gilbert was born about 1180 in Hertford, Hertfordshire, England.1 Gilbert's father was Richard "Strongbow" 4th Earl De Clare and his mother was Amice FitzRobert , Countess of Goucester. His paternal grandparents were Roger "The Good" 5th Earl de Clare and Maud or Matilda de St. Hilary du Harcouet. He had a brother and two sisters, named Richard, Joane and Matilda Maude. He was the youngest of the four children. He had three half-sisters named Isabel FitzGilbert, Joan and Maud (Matilda) De. He died on October 25th, 1230 in Penrose, Brittany, France. He was distrusted by kingJohn in the 1208 fealty oath by offering
William de Braose sanctuarary in hisestates in Ireland when William left
England after initiating many atrocities within England and having his
estates confiscated by King john. The Earl ofPembroke was steadfast in
his support of John.
