Thomas was born in 1435 in Of, Lathom, Lancashire, England. Thomas' father was Thomas Stanley Lord and his mother was Joan Goushill. His paternal grandparents were John Stanley and Isabel Harrington; his maternal grandparents were Robert Goushill Knight and Elizabeth FitzAlan Duchess of Norfolk. He had two brothers and three sisters, named William, John, Elizabeth, Catherine and Margaret. He was the third youngest of the six children.
