!Dapifer, or steward, to King William. [Magna Charta Barons, p. 107]
WAITE LINE - 26th ggrandfather
4th son of Hubert de Rie and by far the ablest and most distinguished. He received enormous possessions in Essex, where his principal estates were, but he also held land in Norfolk, Suffolk, Hertford, Cambridge, Berks, Bedford, Northampton, as well as the gret hereditary office of seneschal or dapifer, to which he succeeded William FitzOsberne. He was with the Conqueror when he died at Caen and following the last wishes of his monarch, hurried to England to secure the succession for his son, William Rufus. Eudo concealed the king's death on his arrival and, clothed with the proper authority, went direct to Winchester, where he secured the keys of the treasury. He then visited the principal strongholds on the coast adjoining Normandy, whose castellans he made swear not to open their gates except at his expressed command, as the king's appointed emissary; after which he returned to Winchester, announced the king's death, handed the keys of the treasury to William Rufus, who was at once proclaimed king. This monarch confirmed him in the office of dapifer and gave him the town of Colchester, where he built a castle, the keep of which was the largest in England. He founded a magnificent abbey, dedicated to Saint-John the Evangelist, and living to a ripe old age, died in 1120, in his castle of Préaux, Normandy. By his wife, Rohesia, dau. of Richard de Bienfaite, he had issue an only dau., Margaret, who m. William de Mandeville, whose son, Geoffry, earl of Essex, was Steward of Normandy, in her right. [Falaise Roll, pp. 16-17, 82]

Eudes de Rie/Eudo Dapifer (1101-20). Steward of the King. His family had been loyal supporters of Duke William; Eudes fought at the Conqueror's side at Hastings. He was tenant in chief of 25 Essex manors, and owned 5 houses, 40 acres, and half the church of St. Peter in Colchester, where he seems to have been popular. He found the Abbey of St. John, where he is buried, and granted the revenues of the castle chapel to the Abbey. He also founded the leper hospital of St. Mary Magdalen. Constable of Colchester Castle. He was a responsible officer serving William I, William II and Henry I.
His only child, Margaret, m. William de Mandeville. [Colchester Castle, p. 6]

Early in life, he was sometimes styled Eudes fitz Hubert, his father being Hubert de Rye. And, the name is properly rendered Eudes, not Eudo. Eudo is the Latin equivalent of his name which needs to be translated into the modern form. [Douglas Richardson]
