His paternal grandparents were William Seigneur de Vernon and Emma Fitz Osbern; his maternal grandparents were William "The Elder" Peverel , of Nottingham and Adeline. He had three brothers and four sisters, named William de, Hugh, Baldwin de, Hawise (Maud) de, Avis De, Avis de and Joan De. He was the oldest of the eight children.-
