William de was born before 1084 in Mortagne-au-Perche, Orne, Normandy, France.1   William de's father was Robert Count De Mortaigne Earl of Cornwall and his mother was Matilda Maud de Montgomery.  His paternal grandparents were Herluin de Conteville Viscount Conteville and Harlette De Falaise Countess of Mortaigne; his maternal grandparents were Roger II de Montgomery Earl of Arundel and Mabel Talvas Belesme Countess of Shrewsbury. He had four sisters named Agnes de Mortain, Emma de, Agnes de and Denise de.  He was the youngest of the five children. He had a half-sister named Miss de.  He died in 1140 in Bermondsey, London, England (as a Cluniac monk).1
