The Parish of Clifton was originally part of the parish of St. Michael, Workington, and in old documents is referred to as an outer-township. It was of the famous 'five towns' given by William de Meschyn to Waldeoff, son of Earl Gospatric which formed the Honour of Cockermouth. The manor of Clifton was not part of the Manor of Workington, but a dependent of Lorton's parcel of the Honour. Cockermouth was held by the King of Scotland, but the assistance he and the Cumbrians offered to the discontented Saxons brought the Normans into the county. Cumbria maintained its independence unther the Saxon chiefs until the reign of Rufus or Henry I. Henry I gave to Ranulph de Meschines the Eardlom of Carlisle. Out of his immense grant, which probably included the whole of Cumberland, Ranulph conveyed to his brother William de Meschyn, whose seat later came to be at Egremont Castle, that portion of land lying between the Derwent and the Duddon, then called the Barony of Copeland.
   William, Lord of Copeland, divided his grant into parts and gave that lying between the Derwent and the Cocker, which included the Five Towns of Dean, Brigham, Eaglesfield, Greysouthen and Clifton, to Waltheof, son of Gospatric, Earl of Dunbar. This was the Gospatric who had been appointed Earl of Northumberland by the Conqueror and was shortly afterwards expelled by him from that office and on his flight to Scotland was made by King Malcolm, Earl of Dunbar.
