THOMAS FITZMAURICE (FITZGERALD), EARL OF KILDARE [IRL], son and heir ofJohn Cam. He is called "esquire " in a deed dated 13 April 1453, and aslate as November 1456, though he was appointed Justiciar 22 November1454. He was then steward of Richard, Duke of York, for the liberty ofMeath, and his deputy as Lieutenant of Ireland. In 1459 he gained a greatvictory over O'Conor Faly. He was appointed Justiciar 30 April 1461 onthe deposition of Henry VI, and retained the office until 1470. Heappears to have been Chancellor for a short time in 1462. In 1464 he andhis wife Joan founded a Franciscan house at Adare, co. Limerick, and madetheir tombs there; in 1465 they joined with Lord Killeen and his wife,the Earl of Desmond and the Bishop of Meath in founding the fraternity-of St. Nicholas at Dunsany. In February 1467/8 he was attainted oftreason, being charged with joining the King's Irish enemies, andsuspected of complicity with his brother-in-law, the Earl of Desmond, whowas executed. The Earl of Kildare was pardoned a few months later andrestored to his honours. In 1471 he became the Deputy of George, Duke ofClarence, the King's Lieutenant, which office he retained until 1475. In1471 he undertook to provide 40 archers for the defence of the fourcounties of the Pale, and in that year made an incursion into the McMahoncountry in Monaghan. In 1472 he founded the fraternity of St. George forthe defence of the English Pale.
He married Joan (dispensation to marry anew 24 January 1455/6, theyhaving previously married per verba de praesenti, though knowing thatthey were related within the prohibited degrees), daughter of James(FITZGERALD), 6th EARL or DESMOND [IRL], by Mary, daughter of Ulick DEBURGH, of Clanricarde. He died 25 March 1477, and is said to have beenburied in All Hallows, Dublin. His widow died 1486, and was buried in themonastery of Adare. [Complete Peerage VII:228-9, (transcribed by DaveUtzinger)]
