NEWLIN LINE

Son of Richard, Comte d'Evreux, and Adele; succeeded his father as comte. Count
William contributed 80 ships to Duke William for the invading army, and appears
in Domesday as "Eberoicensis comes", holding a great barony in Hampshire,
Berkshire and Oxfordshire. About 1070 his castle of Evreux was taken from him
by King William I, in which was placed a royal garrison. It was however
returned to him in 1087 at the death of the Conqueror. He was constantly in
trouble with King Henry I, by whom he was banished from Normandy several times,
but always had his rank and property restored. He d. w/o issue 18 April 1118.
It is conceded by all historians that he was at the Battle of Hastings. He was
sole heir of his cousin, Robert de Gace. Abt 1089 Fulk le Rechine, count of
Anjou, sought of William, count of Evreux, the love Bertrade, his niece, in
marriage. Count William agreed to grant the request providing Duke Robert
Courteheuse would restore to him the lands which rightfully were his, including
those of "my paternal Uncle Raoul, called Tete d'Anne, for Robert de
Gassie, son of Raoul, has made me his sole heir." [Falaise Roll, p. 41, 53]

King Henry of England banished the count of Evreux and William Crispin from
Normandy in the winter of 1111-12. [Falaise Roll, p. 127]

In 1086 he held lands in Hampshire, Berkshire and Oxfordshire. [Anglo-Norman
