William was born about 1070 in St Aubin d'Aubigne, Ille-et-Vilaine, St Malo, Bretagne, France.  William's father was Robert de Toeni Castellan of Stafford and his mother was Adela Adeliza Osule de Savona.  His paternal grandparents were Roger I d'Espagne ('The Spaniard') Toeni Lord of Guerny and Godhilda Goodchild Adelaide of Barcelona. He had three brothers and two sisters, named Geoffrey de, Robert de, Berenger de Tosny Todeni, Alice Adeliza and Agnes de. He had a half-brother named Nicholas.  He died in 1155 in Gresley, Derbyshire, England.
