Mr. John McNutt, & his wife Catharine Anderson removed from Ireland & s
et tled in this county where they brought up a large family - two daugh
te rs & seven sons. One of the daughters married an Englishman named Rho
de s, & the other Rebecca married Mr. John McCorcle by whom she had thr
ee chi ldren Alexander, Samuel & Catharine. Mr. McNutt's sons were Alexand
er, Joh n, Issac Robert Benjamin & William & Joseph. Robert was kill
ed at the batt le of Cowpens & his brotherinlaw, W. McCorcle died on his w
ay home - fr om a wound received in the same battle. After Mr.McCorcle's d
eath his wid ow married Mr. Arther Glasgow by whom she had a large fami
ly of children.

John reported as an early settler with Alexander McNutt in Augus
ta C o, VA (NGS Quarterly, Vol. 25, p. 51). "John McNutt ("Johnny, the Sco
tchma n) [another record calls him "Scotch Johnny"] and his wife, Katheri
ne Ande rson, about 1750, arrived in the upper valley of the James from Co
unty Uls ter, Ireland. He settled on North River about 6 miles east of Lex
ington, w here he had grants of land from the government." He was one of 1

ersity. An other McNutt file said: "John McNutt migrated to America from D
onegal Coun ty, Ireland about 1745 and settled in Orange Co. (now Rockbrid
ge) Va. on t he North River about 6 miles east of Lexington where he had g
rants of la nd from the government. His wife was Katherine, daughter of Ro
bert Anders on of Killagorwen. His father had already established himse
lf close-by ." It is said the original name was McKnight and that on the
ir emigrati on from Scotland to Ireland they changed it to McNutt. This st
atement is q uite confirmed by the fact that on examination of a full a
nd complete dire ctory of Scotland in 1889, the name McNutt was not foun
d. Katherine Anders on had a brother, ancestor of the Anderson Family of B
outetourt County, Vi rginia.

A John McNutt was listed in Capt. Christian's company of Augusta Coun
ty mi litia on 27 Jul 1756 (NGS Quarterly, Vol. 25, p.71). He had settl
ed on Nor th River in an area that became Rockbridge County. His wife w
as Catheri ne Anderson, a great aunt of Judge Francis T. Anderson. O
ne of their son s, Alexander, was the father of Governor Alexander G. McNu
tt of Mississip pi (1838-1842), and grand parent of Generals Frank Paxt
on and Albert G. Je nkins, both killed in the War between the States.
