His paternal grandparents were William MacKeahey and Margaret Unknown; his maternal grandparents were Samuel Jackson and Christian Unknown. He had four brothers and two sisters, named James,Jr., John, William L., George Burder, Eleanor and Margaret. He was the third oldest of the seven children.
