Currie came to the community to teach sch oo l. He fell in love with one of his pupils, Margaret, and married he r. He w as typical of the Scots who inhabited that part of North Carolin a. Mo st of them spoke only Gaelic, but John was educated in English als o. He w as a devout Presbyterian; Rev. William Angus McLeod recalls his gr andfath er as rather stern, but Margaret was beautiful and angelic in disp ositio n. No man surpassed John Currie in regard for the true and goo d. He lov ed righteousness and hated iniquity, while Margaret loved righte ousness, b ut pitied iniquity. He was the "law" and she was the "gospel ." John w as a modest man, and though he was eminently qualified, he nev er sought n or would accepted public or Church office. He was a Major in t he Militi a; in politics (says Rev. McLeod ) he was a Democrat, however, b efore Demo cracy had so completely fallen into the hands of scums of the f oreign elem ents of the big cities. A sentiment which has been echoed by m any other Ke ahey descendants who have felt that the Democratic party le ft all its prin ciples, before many of its members began to leave it.
