My family has historical roots down there. My maternal grandfathers gran
df ather was a long time resident of Milam county. His name was Archiba
ld Laf ayette Graham. He married the former Rebecca Hurt in the early 1870
's a nd they farmed outside of Milano for many years. Archie died on Apr
il 30,1 928 and Rebecca died on August 6,1945. They are both buried in t
he Hurt-Gr aham cemetery. Archie was a Confederate soldier that served wi
th the 8th T exas infantry, Company K during the war between the state
s. I have his app roved Confederate pension application that he filled o
ut on January 9,191 4. It is a source of great pride for me considering t
he fact that I have b een a southern history and culture buff most of my l
ife. I have a deep aff ection for the old Confederacy. Archie and Rebecca
's home and property we re worth around $2000 in 1914 when the applicati
on was applied for. O ne of their daughters was Millie Omega Graham, and t
hat is my maternal gra ndfathers mother. She married a man by the na
me of Rufus Hensley and th ey left Milam county and moved to Lynn Count
y, Texas about 50 miles sou th of Lubbock. I and my grandparents both li
ve in Lubbock now. The Hensle ys were all raised up in neighboring Burles
on county. Story goes that t he Grahams were a little on the uppity side a
nd considered the Hensley's " white trash". But the Hensleys went on to be
come notable servants of the s tate in their own right. John Hensley, o
ne of Rufus's brothers, became a T exas Ranger and served the state for al
most 30 years before his death. Th ey say that his gun is at the Texas Ran
