According to research by Russ Bralley, 1989: Frederick enlisted in Ju
ne or July 1776 for two years and six months (plus an additional 6 month
s) during the American Revolution in the North Carolina
State Line from Surry County, North Carolina.
He enlisted in the 6th Regiment under Generals More and Nash. He was disch
arged in 1779 by Colonel Clark. As part of the payment for his military se
rvice, he received bounty land in Hawkins County,
Tennessee and settled there in 1779. Bounty Land Warrant #119-100 was iss
ued 21 September 1804 to his attorney, Daniel Wheaton, who apparently act
ed as his agent, securing the land for him. He
received 274 acres.
On 24 August 1818, Frederick applied for a government pension in Hawkins C
ounty, Tennessee. He received Pension Certificate #8,917. He was award
ed a pension at the rate of eight dollars per month to
commence on 24 August 1818.
On his pension application, he gave his age as 74 years, as of February 18
18. This means he was born in February 1743, actually 25 February 174
3. He also stated that he had lived in America for about
21 and 1/2 years. This date seems to indicate he arrived in America abo
ut 1753, which is the same year that his father, Johann Frederick Deser
n, arrived. Frederick also indicated that he had a wife
and child, but failed to give their names. However, he did indicate his w
ife's age as "about 48" and his son's age as 10.
Subsequent research reveals that Frederick's second wife was named Franc
es Hubbard, daughter of Benjamin and Susan Hubbard. This marriage produc
ed a child named Benjamin Dezarn.
After his death in 1834, Frederick Dezern appeared on the Tennessee Pensi
on Roll of 1835:
Frederick Dezern, Hawkins County, Private, North Carolina Continental Lin
e, $96.00 Annual Allowance,
$962.66 amount received, April 3, 1819 pension started, age 90.
His widow, Frances, died 11 March 1854. Information on her death certifica
te was supplied by their son, Benjamin Dezarn. He gave the year of his mo
ther's birth as 1760. Her cause of death was old
age.
According to the 1790 Surry County, North Carolina census, Frederick (Deve
rn) was in Surry County, North Carolina in 1790. The census presumably sho
ws 2 parents and 8 children: (2 free white males
over 16, born before 1774; 4 free white males under 16, born 1774-1790; a
nd 4 free white females).
Frederick bought a farm in Surry County, North Carolina in 1792. He so
ld in the farm in 1797, a date conforming to his pension applicati
on as to when he left North Carolina. When he applied for his
pension, he was living in Scott County, Virginia.
There is a record in the Granville, North Carolina Marriages 1753-1868 o
f: Deson, Frederick & Nancy Hanes. 21 Jan 1808; Aaron Pinson, bm; A. H. Sn
eed, wit.
According to an 1810 Lee County Tax List, Frederick was in Lee County, Vir
ginia along with sons Elisha and Francis (aka Francis "Frankie").
Scott County, Virginia 1820 Census: Frederick Desarn, 1 male under 10; 1 m
ale 45 or over; 1 female 45 or over.
Frederick Desern is included in the Revolutionary Pension List of 1820 f
or East Tennessee.
