According to research by Thomas J. DeZern of Spartanburg, South Carolin
a, Nathaniel bought 85 acres of land in Orange County, North Carolina in 1
769 adjacent to his brother James.
According to Orange County, North Carolina Deed Book 2, page 168: 21 May 1
785, James Desarn of Orange to John May of same, one hundred pounds, 175 a
cres, begin Thomas Lewis at the mouth of the spring
branch, so up meanders to John Baker's line, to John Vickers' line, to Ed
ward Grisham Senr. line, to first station; signed James Desarn; witness: S
amuel May, Matt Clinton; proved by Mathew Clinton
August Term 1785.
According to Granville, North Carolina Marriages 1753-1868, Nathaniel Dese
rn and Eleanor Cozort: marriage 15 April 1786, Granvillie County, North Ca
rolina. Some records also indicate Nathaniel
married Ellen Watson. However, this cannot be proven and is apparently in
correct.
According to Orange County, North Carolina Deed Book 4, page 593: 18 Janua
ry 1789, John Vickars Junr. of Orange to Nathaniel Desern of Granville, si
xty five pounds, 85 acres, on S side of Elibars
Cr., joins John Picket, John May, James Desern, Reley Vickers, (no met
es and bounds); signed: John Vickars; witness: Henry Bunch, James (+) Dese
rn; acknowledged August 1792 Term.
Nathaniel and James Desern are listed as heads of household in the 1790 Ce
nsus, Orange County, NC in the St. Marks District of Hillsborough.
In the 1800 census, he is recorded as Nathaniel Desun, living next do
or to his brother James Desern. The census listing for Nathaniel is: 1 ma
le 16-26, 1 male 25-45, 2 females to 10, 1 female 10-16,
and 1 female 26-45.
By 1810, Nathaniel had moved to Henderson, Kentucky, and is listed in t
he 1810 census as Nathaniel Diserne, 2 males 26-45, 2 females to 10, a
nd 2 females 10-16. The 1810 Henderson County, Kentucky
census cites Nathaniel Dizerne on page 343.
The 1820 Henderson County, Kentucky census cites Nathaniel Dozern on pa
ge 16.
The 1830 Henderson County Kentucky census cites Elianor Dezern on page 23
2. This is probably Nathaniel's wife, following his death in 1825 in Hende
rson County, Kentucky.
There is also a Nathaniel Desern recorded in the 1870 Surry County, Nor
th Carolina census; page 352, Pilot Township (next to Elisha Desern, pa
ge 351), ID#52377160. This is possibly Nathaniel Augustus
Dezern, a son of Ephriam Desern and Catherine Gibbons.
There is also record of a Nathaniel Desern and Jemima Matthews: marria
ge 3 January 1814, Orange County, North Carolina.
