Merle Percy Basham 
Merle Percy was born on September 14th, 1906 in San Ardo, California.1 Merle Percy's father was Robert Matthew Basham and his mother was Pearle Kent. His paternal grandparents were John Pickens Basham and Mary Jane Brown; his maternal grandparents are John Kent and Cynthia Phillips. He had two sisters named Arline and Thelma. He was the oldest of the three children. He died at the age of 66 on April 25th, 1973 in Pala Alto, California.1 General Notes

Merle was born in Monterey County town of San Ardo. He was graduat
ed fr om Stanford University in 1929 and began his career as an illustrat
or wi th Sunset Magazine in San Francisco. He held various jobs after th
at a nd also worked as a freelance illustrator. He worked at JC Hend
y, a defen se contractor during World War II. At night he was a volunte
er defence wo rker. He bought a house in Palo Alto in 1953 and lived the
re until 197 1, when he retired and moved to Mountain View.
He was very active in the Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts and was a troop le
ad er in Palo Alto and in San Carlos. He was an avid hiker and camper a
nd hi ked the rim of Yosemite many times. After retiring, Merle pursued w
ood a nd ceramic sculpting.
