J. F. Basham, a prosperous farmer of Pidcock ranch, Coryell County, Te
xa s, and a pioneer of this place, was born in Giles County, Tenness
ee in 183 1. His father, Solomon Basham, a successful farmer and stock gro
wer, was b orn in Tennessee in 1796. He left Tennessee in 1835 and mov
ed to Crawfo rd County, Arkansas, where he died in 1872. His father was Ri
chard Basha m. Solomon Basham was married at the age of twenty two yea
rs to Elizabe th Marler. Her mother's maiden name was Coffey. The resu
lt of this union w as: Cynthia, wife of Jacob Miller; Coffey Basham, of Co
ryell county; Jo hn M., deceased; Susan, deceased; J. F.; Columbus, of Eas
tland Count y; W. R., also of Eastland County; America, wife of George Cam
p; Jasp er N, of Arkansas; Thomas Jefferson, also of Arkansas; Henry, of L
ouisian a; and three daughters that died in infancy.
When the subject of our sketch became of age, he at once engaged in t
he o ccupation of farming and stock-raising, which he has continued to t
he pres ent time. In 1854 he came Coryell County, where he was a promine
nt fact or in the early Indian fights, having had many a lucky shot at t
he redskin s. When the war came on he started to join the Confederate serv
ices, but g ot only as far as Galveston when failing health forced h
im to return hom e. After the war the Indians were very troublesome, and M
r. Basham lo st as many as sixty three head of horses by their incursion
s. In a fight n ear Peter's Gap, he saved the lives of his party by singli
ng out the chi ef and boring him through with his fatal bullet.
In 1879 he moved to his present farm of 545 acres, 200 acres of whi
ch a re fine valley land and under cultivation. Mr. Basham makes a speci
al ty of raising horses and mules. He was married in McLennan Coun
ty in 18 52 to Dicy Ann, daughter of William Wagener, of Tennessee, and n
ee Julia E mery, daughter of Jesse Emery. The children of Mr and Mrs Bash
am are Willi am, deceased; Solomon; Johnson, deceased; Lee, deceased; Leon
ora, wi fe of R. S. Roggers; Callie, wife of Joe I. Culp; and Leler, Wile
