Jacob Straley (the Younger) was a brick mason by trade and he settled in the area of New River, Montgomery Co.,VA in 1782. (1) On March 5, 1790 he paid taxes on four horses; again October 19, 1790 he was taxed for an additional three horses. He had two white males 16 -21years old as members of his household. (2) In 1793 he appears on Tax List "A" of Wythe Co., VA., and again in 1795 on the Tax List of Grayson Co., V A. In 1810 John Tyler, Esq., Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia, granted to Jacob Straley forty-nine (49) acres of land on the west side of New Riv er on Rich Hill for service
during the Revolution. (3) Three sons of Jacob and Martha---James, Daniel, and John served in the
War of 1812. ( 1) Giles County Deed Book I, page 366, for 1815, indicates that Jacob deeded to his sons, John and Charles Straley 102 acres of land on the north side of Buckeye Mountain. (4) The Tax List of March 11, 1815 indicates that in Jacob Straley's household were living 4 white males over 16 years of age, also he paid tax on 4 slaves, 7 horses and 32 head of cattle. (5) Matthew French Straley, the seventh son of Jacob and Martha, died young and never married. He fathered an illegitimate daughter named Martha Ann Virginia Straley, born circa 1839. Martha Ann married on May 22, 1856 to Jefferson Lee Straley, also an illegitimate son of Joseph B. Straley. The record states that Jefferson was living in Owen Co., Indiana at the time of marriage. Jefferson and Martha were cousins, as Joseph and Matthew
