Smith was born in 1836 in Mississippi.1 Smith's father was Furlough and her mother was No. 270 Furlow. Her maternal grandparents were Hurd and Heard. She had four brothers and five sisters, named Furlow, Furlow, Furlow, William Henry Harrison, Gerrald, Wilson, Williams, Elizabeth and Gibson. She is the fifth youngest of the ten children.-
