Joseph was born about 1839 in Logan Co., Virginia.1 Joseph's father was Joseph H. Lester and his mother was Dicey Bailey. His maternal grandparents were Archibald Bailey and Agnes Nancy Godfrey. He had nine brothers and five sisters, named Pleasant, Masten Bailey, Lewis B., Isaac B., Parris F., Archibald B., David B., Matthew J., Amos, Rebecca, Nancy, Elizabeth, Dicy and Taza. He is the sixth youngest of the fifteen children.-
