Thomas was born about 1817 in Tazewell Co., Virginia.1 Thomas' father was Absolom Godfrey and his mother is Mary Ellen Bailey. His maternal grandparents were James Bailey and Margaret Stinson. He had six brothers and five sisters, named James W., John D., Lewis Gerome, George H., Armour Lawson, Oscar Paris, Juliana, Margaret S., Mahulda, Cosbi and Mary Ellen. He is the third oldest of the twelve children.-
