His paternal grandfather was Isaac Bailey and his paternal grandmother is Judy Cooke. He had two brothers and nine sisters, named William Brooks, Martin, Julia Anne, Malinda, Cynthia E., Nancy Davis, Dorcas, Jane, Aura, Oma and Susan. He was the fourth oldest of the twelve children.
