Martha was born about 1757 in Edgecomb Co., North Carolina.  Martha's father was Etheldred Phillips and her mother was Sarah Jane Exum.  Her maternal grandparents are John Exum and Elizabeth Kinchen. She had five brothers and four sisters, named Eaton, Etheldred, Exum, Clemmon, Figers, Sallie, Elizabeth, Charlotte and Nancy.
