Eaton was born in 1740 in Edgecomb Co., North Carolina.  Eaton's father was Etheldred Phillips and his mother was Sarah Jane Exum.  His maternal grandparents are John Exum and Elizabeth Kinchen. He had four brothers and five sisters, named Etheldred, Exum, Clemmon, Figers, Sallie, Elizabeth, Martha, Charlotte and Nancy.
