Cornelius was born in 1695 in Chowan, Craven, North Carolina. Cornelius' father was Leonard LOFTIN and his mother was Elizabeth UNKNOWN. His paternal grandparents were Ludwick Leonard LOFTIN and Elizabeth UNKNOWN. He had three brothers and eight sisters, named Cornelius, Leonard, Benoni, Jane, Joyce, Dorcellay, Jane, Mary, Joyce, Dorcelly and Mary. He was the fifth oldest of the twelve children.
