Hiram "Ulysses" Simpson was born on April 27th, 1822 in Point Pleasant, Clermont, Ohio. Hiram "Ulysses" Simpson's father was Jessie Root GRANT and his mother was Hannah SIMPSON. His paternal grandparents were Noah GRANT and Rachel Miller KELLY; his maternal grandparents were John SIMPSON and Rebecca WEIR. He had two brothers and four sisters, named Samuel Simpson, Orvil Lynch, Clara Rachel, Virginia Paine, Mary Frances and Rachel C.. He was the oldest of the seven children. He died at the age of 63 on July 23rd, 1885 in Mount Mcgregor, New York, New York. He was buried on August 8th, 1885 in Grant's Tomb, New York City, New York, New York.General Notes

Was elected in 1868 over Horatio Seymour by a popular vote of 3,013,421 to
2,706,829 and an electoral vote of 214 to 80. Won reelection in 1872 by votes
of 3,596,745 to 2,843,446 and 286 to 0 over Horace Greeley. Became known in
1862 as "Unconditional Surrender Grant". In 1864, Lt. General Grant was given
command of the northern army; accepted General Lee's surrender at Appomattox.

Grant was an outstanding military figure and the savior of the Union during the Civil War, as well as the 18th President of the United States from 1869-77. He was an author of unusual ability and his Memoirs are widely regarded as one of the great books written in the English language. He was also a complex individual with uncommon virtues.

Grant married, on August 22, 1848, Julia Boggs Dent, daughter of Frederick Tracy Dent of St. Louis, and Ellen Bray (Wrenshall) Dent. She was was born in St. Louis on January 26, 1826, and died in Washington, D.C. on December 14, 1902.
