Marshall Ervin was born in December 1852 in Illinios. Marshall Ervin's father was Essex Epperson and his mother was Mary Hathaway. His paternal grandparents were Antony Epperson and Ellender Divers. He had a brother and five sisters, named Nepolon, Josephine, Louisa, Mary, Virginia A. and Amanda. He was the third youngest of the seven children.
