Robert was born in 1738 in Montgomery, , Va. Robert's father was Joseph Louis Crockett and his mother was Jeanne DEVIGNE. His paternal grandparents were Joseph Louis Crockett and Sarah (Stuart) Stewart; his maternal grandparents are Jean DEVIGNE and Jean UNKNOWN. He had six brothers and five sisters, named Hugh, Walter, Joseph, Samuel, Joseph, Anthony, Mary, Martha, Nancy Agnes, Elizabeth and Martha Or Mattie. He was the third oldest of the twelve children.
