John was born in 1708 in , , Virginia. John's father was Matthias CHITWOOD (MATTHIS) and his mother is Mary KEY. His paternal grandfather is Thomas CHETWOOD; his maternal grandparents are Richard KEY and Mary Cartwright. He had six brothers and a sister, named Richard Chetwood, Matthias .Jr., James, William, John, Richard and Eliner. He was the third oldest of the eight children.
