Ruth's father was Joseph Gilbert Anderson Allred and her mother was Elizabeth Allen. Her paternal grandparents were Joseph Anderson Allred and Rhoda Ann Palmer. She had three half-brothers and three half-sisters, named Christopher Anderson, Joseph Myron, Charles Gilbert, Sarah Martin, Rhoda Olive and Margaret Eliza.
