Hugh was born in 0938 in Paris, Seine, France.1 Hugh's father was Hugues Capet and his mother was Hedwig Avoie-Hatbruide. His paternal grandparents were Robert Capet and Beatrix (Beatrice) De Vermandois; his maternal grandparents were Heinrich (Henry) Von Babenberg and Matilda Von Ringelheim. He had three brothers and four sisters, named Herbert, Otto (Odo) Henry 'The Great', Henry, Béatrice, Beatrix, Beatrice and Emma. He was the third oldest of the eight children.
