Jean II was born about 1247 in Brabant, Antwerp, Belgium, Netherlands.1   Jean II's father was Jean I d'Avesnes and his mother was Amice Burgundy.  His paternal grandparents were Bouchard De Avesnes and Marguerite De Flandres; his maternal grandparents were Floris IV Burgundy and Mathilde de Brabant. He had five brothers and three sisters, named Baudouin, Bouchard, Guy, Guillaume, Floris, Elizabeth de, Jeanne and Marguerite.  He was the oldest of the nine children.  He died on August 22nd, 1304 in , Valenciennes, Nord, France.1 


Jean II's first family with Philippa Luxembourg

‌Jean II and Philippa were married in a religious ceremony in 1270 in <, Valenciennes, Nord, France>.1   They had seven sons and eight daughters, named Henri, Jean, Jean III, Willem III, Valeran de, Willem, Simon, Yolande, Alix, Marguerite, Isabelle, Jeanne, Marie, Aleid and Ida.
