Jean I was born in April 1218 in , Etroent, Luxembourg, Netherlands.1   Jean I's father was Bouchard De Avesnes and his mother was Marguerite De Flandres.  His paternal grandparents were Jacques de Avesnes and Adelphie de Guise; his maternal grandparents were Baudouin XI (VI) Hainaut and Marie de Navarre. He had two brothers named Baudouin d' and Baudouin. He had three half-brothers and three half-sisters, named Guillaume de, Jean de, Guy de, Jeanne de, Gertrude de and Marie de.  He died at the age of 39 on December 24th, 1257 in , Valenciennes, Nord, France.  He was buried in , Valenciennes, Nord, France.1 1 


Jean I's family with Amice Burgundy

‌Jean I and Amice were married in a religious ceremony in September 1246 in , Frankfurt Am Main, Hessen-Nassau, Preussen.1   They had six sons and three daughters, named Jean II, Baudouin, Bouchard, Guy, Guillaume, Floris, Elizabeth de, Jeanne and Marguerite.
