His paternal grandparents were Jacques de Avesnes and Adelphie de Guise; his maternal grandparents were Baudouin XI (VI) Hainaut and Marie de Navarre. He had two brothers named Baudouin d' and Baudouin. He had three half-brothers and three half-sisters, named Guillaume de, Jean de, Guy de, Jeanne de, Gertrude de and Marie de.
