Hiram was born on June 17th, 1835.1 Hiram's father was Michael Yakes and his mother was Jane VanZandt. His paternal grandparents were Daniel Yakes and Mary Nicely; his maternal grandparents were Garrett VanZandt and Elizabeth Lewis. He had six brothers and eight sisters, named John, Daniel, James, William, Abraham, Solomon, Elizabeth, Mary, Susan VanZant, Susan, Nancy, Nancy Jane, Polly and Sarah.
