Bertha of was born about 0776 in Aachen, Rhineland, Prussia.1 Bertha of's father was Charlemagne Emperor Of Holy Roman Empire and her mother was Hildegard Of Germany. Her paternal grandparents were *Pepin III "The Short" King Of France and Bertrada II Of Laon; her maternal grandparents were Gerold (Vinzgau) Of Schwabia and Emma (Schwabia) Of Germany. Princess of France. Her father, Charlemagne, kept his daughters close at hand, refusing to let them marry or enter a nunnery. Being from the Frankish cultural tradition, however, dad had a relaxed attitude about sexual activities. Bertha and her sisters were allowed to have love affairs, even with men of lower social standing. Dad's rules: Keep it under my roof but out of my sight.
When she wanted a winter's afternoon delight with her lover the poet Angilbert, Bertha had to avoid tell-tale footprints from his room to hers. So she slogged through the snow to his digs in the main castle, trudged back to her tower bedroom with Angilbert clinging piggy-back, and returned him the same way.
